Parque el MajueloParque el Majuelo
This beautiful botanical garden, (a Phoenician necropolis) with over 180 different species of plants, also houses the remains of what was a fish salting industry dating back to the fourth century B.C. The subtropical gardens are situated beneath the Castillo and you will see numerous exoctic plants representing all the tropical zones including Central America, Africa, Asia, and the Oceanas. Within the parque grounds there is a bar and a number of workshops and gift shops. In the summer months it’s a lovely place to relax and get some relief from the sun. During these months there are shows and music concerts including a week long jazz festival. Details of these will be displayed in the Almunecar Life – Events Calendar. The parque also houses the remains of a fish salting factory. It dates from the Phoenician Punic period from the fourth century B.C. although it gained its splendour during the Roman period where the industry continued flourishing until the beginning of the fourth century A.D. This industry contributed enormously to the economy in Almunecar. Of its products probably the most renowned was ‘Garum’ a type of fish paste made from the fish entrails. Viewing the remains you will see the building foundations containing the salting pits. Between the pits run passageways and water channels. The discovery of the fish factory first came to light in 1970, where an excavation dig was carried out by Manuel Sotomayor and Enrique Pareja. When the importance of their discovery was realized, a further archaeological excavation was undertaken by a team of specialists headed up by Federico Molina Fajardo, the town archaeologist. This dig unearthed what you see today. Opening times All day during the summer daylight hours Winter closes 19.30 |
