Historical Statues and Monuments:

(A brief overview)

Castillo de San Miguel (San Miguel Castle)
The castle was built by the Romans in the 1st Century BC and later further developed by the Moors into an impressive fortress.
 
Atalayas de Vigilancia Costeras (Coastal Watchtowers)
Used during the Arab rule to monitor entrances at sea, coastal watchtowers remain even today in perfect condition in some beaches of Almuñécar.





Fountain in Calle Real
The Royal fountain in Calle Real built in 1559 using the existing Roman water supply






Monument to Laurie Lee
Located in the Paseo del Altillo on Playa Puerta del Mar in Almuñécar, this plaque commemorates his visits here before the Spanish Civil War and then in the 50's. 










Monumento a los Fenicios (Monument to the Phoenicians)
This is on the Paseo del Altillo. The Phoenicians first put Almuñécar on the map as a trading town in the 800s BC. At that time it was named it Sexi and today, some local inhabitants still refer to themselves as ‘Sexitanos’. During this period, Almuñécar’s large fish salting and curing industry became a major supplier to Greece and Rome. 







Monumento a Abderramán (Statue of Abderramán)

This statue is below El Peñon on the Plaza de Abderramán. It commemorates the landing from North Africa in 755 AD of Omeya Abderraman I and his followers from Damascus. This denoted the start of over 730 years of Moorish influence in Spain.

Cruz del Santo/Peñón del Santo (Holy Cross/Rock)
Located on El Peñon, this is without doubt one of the most iconic monuments of Almuñécar. Placed there in 1900, it is now seen as a privileged place to view the diverse scenery which gives Almuñécar its special character.

A Los Hombres De La Mar (Monument to the sailors)
This brass monument on the Paseo Marítimo in neighbouring La Herradura is a tribute to all shipwrecked sailors.

Monumento al Agua (Monument to the Water)
Outside the police station, there are three bronze statues (one male and two females) surrounding a fountain which form a reminder of the area’s most precious asset, water. They have been nicknamed the “headless break dancers”.

Arco en honor a Blas Infante (The Blas Infante Arch)
Located next to the fairground, this monument was erected as an honour to Blas Infante Pérez de Vargas, an Andalusian politician, writer, historian and musicologist, known as the "Father" of Andalusian patrimony (Padre de la Patria Andaluza).

Castillo (Carlos III) La Herradura
The Castle in neighbouring La Herradura is an impressive building. It was built in the 18th Century during the reign of by Carlos III as part of the coastal defence.
