Welcome to the Magical Night of San Juan! The festival commemorates Saint John the Baptist, but can also be traced to earlier pagan festivals that venerate the summer solstice and the magical power of the sun. It's a day and night of contrasts: a day when the sun shines for longer than any other day in the year, yet it also marks the start of the gloomy journey into winter; it's a night of magical enchantment, but it’s also the witches’ night. The festival celebrates these contrasts: night into day, fire to water. It also represents the power of change: fire burns the old to start anew with water that restores, refreshes, and revives the spirit and well-being. Bonfires are lit all along the beaches and people set up their camps for the night with tables, chairs and tents. Everyone joins in the fun, young and old alike, and there is food, music, singing, dancing, and fireworks. The smell of smoke fills the air and there is a very special atmosphere of joy and a great sense of camaraderie. There are various traditions, like throwing pieces of paper (with wishes written on) into the bonfire; burning muñecas or dolls; or jumping over the fire three times to bring luck. But the most fun of all is the one that says you have to bathe in the sea at midnight. It is an amazing sight to see so many people diving and jumping into the sea by the light of the bonfires. Some just paddle and splash their face in the water – last year I saw two young men carrying their grandmother to the water’s edge to rinse her face in the sea water. The night of San Juan is surreal – entrancing to watch and an honour to share! It is one of the festivals that most epitomizes life in Spain, with its love of having a good time in the company of friends and loved ones. By Tressa Davey Jun 23, 2010
