Two British children found dead in hotel room in Spain – mother arrested and father on sex charges. Two British Children were found dead in room 101 in the Hotel Miramar in Lloret de Mar on Tuesday, and their mother was arrested by the Catalan Police after confessing to killing them. The mother herself, 43 year-old Lianne Smith, asked the hotel reception to call the police. When they asked why, she is reported to have said: “You will see”. When the police arrived, they found the children, a boy aged one and a girl aged five, already dead in the hotel room. It is thought that the children were suffocated as their bodies were lying on the bed, carefully covered with a blanket, with no outward signs of injury. Spanish press has reported that officers found a note in the room in which Mrs Smith confessed to killing them and explained her motive.Cleaners reported that earlier in the morning at 09:30 there was a notice on the hotel room door, saying “Please do not disturb. My children are ill.” When the mother later spoke to reception at about 14:00, a member of the hotel staff said "She seemed calm and cold, she was not hysterical, but when I looked into her eyes I could see something serious had happened." At the Miramar Hotel, room 101 is locked with a police seal, although the hotel has reopened. On the pavement outside are a bunch of flowers and a pink teddy bear with a note saying "RIP little ones. God has gained 2 angels." Everyone in the area is still deeply shocked by what has happened. An investigating judge will now decide whether to charge Mrs Smith with “premeditated murder”. A post-mortem examination is expected to take place on Thursday. After her arrest she was taken back to the hotel in handcuffs, wearing jeans and a white top, where she explained to officers exactly what had happened. She spent around two hours in the hotel before being taken back to the police station. She is currently undergoing psychiatric tests and is expected to appear in a Spanish court by the end of the week. Yesterday, more bizarre twists to the story were revealed. Her partner, Martin Anthony Smith, 45, father of the children, was extradited to Britain on May 7th to face unrelated sex offences charges. He had been on the run for more than two years after skipping police bail and had been listed as one of Britain’s most wanted men. Lianne Smith too and her daughter were reported missing from the Staffordshire area in December 2007. The police discovered Mrs Smith’s car had been seen boarding a ferry at Dover and the couple’s movements were tracked to Spain, where the trail went cold until police received a tip-off that they were living in Barcelona. The year the family went missing, Mr Smith had appeared on the television programme Most Haunted as a guest psychic investigating alleged paranormal occurrences at Brougham Hall near Penrith. Mr Smith, originally from North Shields, Tyneside, was told about the deaths of his children when he landed in the UK on Tuesday, and immediately threatened to kill himself. He is now on suicide watch. Sadly, it now appears that Lianne Smith, a former education officer, originally from Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne, who believed in her partner’s innocence, may have tried to get help, warning that she “couldn’t cope”. She contacted a publicist in a plea for help days before she allegedly killed her five-year-old daughter Rebecca and 11-month-old son Daniel because she feared they would be taken into care by British authorities. “She said she had many problems with the British authorities, who wanted to put the children in care,” said one source close to the investigation. In an interview after he was arrested, she revealed that she would stand by her partner. 'If I had only one small doubt, I would have ended our relationship,' she said. By Tressa Davey May 20, 2010
