Granada Corpus Celebrations Marred by Homophobia Accusation.

Gay rights association (NOS), supported by the PSOE (Socialist Workers) and the IU (United Left) parties, took court action against the City Council in Granada because of homophobic content in one of this year’s ‘quintilla’ rhymes sung during the Corpus celebrations in the city. The words to the rhyme are also exhibited in public places around Granada. The Colega gay association has also protested to the City Council arguing that insulting words such as ‘Maricón’ (queer or poof) had no place in the Corpus Christi celebrations. As a result, the word has now been removed from the winning 'quintilla' rhyme by the City Hall.

The words to the rhyme are:
“El turismo homosexual
Promove Diputacíon
Dicen que mueve un pastón
Contento está mi Pascual
Que es un poco maricón”

An approximate translation is:
“Gay tourism is
Promoted by the City Council
They say is makes them a lot of money
My friend Pascual is happy
He’s a bit of a poof”

The Partido Popular councillor for Culture, Juan García Montero, said that bringing court action was ridiculous and that the world has gone mad. He also commented that the rhyme has been voted for by a jury.

Corpus Christi is a Catholic celebration to honour the ‘Body of Christ’. It is held throughout Spain in either May or June depending on when Easter occurs, this year being June.

The biggest and most spectacular of the Corpus Christi celebrations is held in Granada. According to historians, Catholic kings used the Corpus Christi festivities to encourage the predominantly Muslim population in Granada to convert to Christianity. They paid large sums of money to make the Corpus Christi party the biggest and the best and urged the town to ‘go crazy’!

As Corpus Christi was so close to the annual Granada Feria, the two events were eventually merged, making it an even bigger festival. Nowadays, Granada really pulls out all the stops to make the week-long celebrations a huge attraction and people to come from all over the world over just to enjoy this week in Granada. This year, the week starts on Monday 31st May and will finish on Sunday 6th June with a magnificent firework display.

Today, there will be a giant procession through the streets, featuring giants and monsters as well as "La Tarasca" a gaudily dressed female figure who is an important part of the procession, symbolising the triumph of the beautiful over the ugly.

Tomorrow, the more solemn Eucharist Procession takes place, carrying the Holy Host (Body of Christ) from the Cathedral in the heart of the city on a flower-filled carriage through the streets of Granada. Spectators throw flowers and herbs as the procession passes them. A huge fairground is set up in Almanájar, near Granada bus station where great fun is to be had by all.

Corpus Christi Granada is a fiesta that encapsulates the fun and joy of life that so typifies the Spanish people.

All the more of a shame then that this year’s celebrations have been marred by this. However, the PP councillor has now apologised in the name of the City Hall for those who may have been offended.
