Almuñécar Tourist Associations sign a new agreement with the Town Hall.

The presidents of business associations for tourism in the municipality have signed a new collaboration framework agreement with the Town Hall, aimed at promoting the local tourist industry. The objective is to improve cooperation in the organisation and coordination of events to encourage tourism in Almuñécar.

The meeting was chaired by the mayor, John Carlos Benavides and was attended by area coordinator for Tourism, Rosario Gonzalez; manager of the Board, Philip Gates; secretary of Hoteliers, Rafael Lamelas, Councillor for Beaches, Daniel Barbero and Councillor for Urbanisation, Jesús García; as well as representatives of the signatory associations: José Andrés Fernández (Hoteliers Association), Francisco Trujillo ( Chiringuitos Association), and Eleuterio Antequera (Restaurateurs Association).

The mayor addressed the meeting, saying that in these times of crisis, "it is important to coordinate both public and private initiatives aimed at promoting and encouraging the tourism sector with whatever resources we have available to us”. He said “although the economic upturn in Northern Europe has not yet reached Spain, it will help us to overcome the obstacles ahead of us in recovering from the tough times of the past few years”. As for the benefits of acting jointly, the mayor said, "if we go hand in hand with a network of associations and work together, Almuñécar tourism will remain the benchmark has always been despite the difficulties".

One of the most important things that they are trying to achieve is the recognition of Almuñécar as a "Tourist Town". The mayor said that this was applied for several years ago but the application has been ignored by the Regional Administration. The mayor said he will make one last attempt to get an agreement before taking more formal action: "because it would be unfortunate if we have to demand something that we believe is our entitlement. We are the only municipality in the province of Granada that has made the request, met all the parameters and conditions required, and yet has been ignored by the Regional Administration. Our lack of status in this regard prevents us from competing on equal terms with other tourist areas that already have this recognition."

Three of the signatories added their statements to require the Regional Administration to declare Almuñécar a Tourist Town: José Andrés Fernández thanked the City Council for its desire to collaborate during these difficult times and pledged that his Association would do everything possible to help Almuñécar achieve recognition; Francisco Trujillo said that his industry will also make a call to the Autonomous Administration for Almuñécar be recognized as the Tourist Town; and Eleuterio Antequera said: "We thank the City Council for their support with a commitment to help us all try to survive and fight to stay afloat as best we can. Likewise, we join the unanimous call for the declaration of Almuñécar as a Tourist Town, because we are convinced that we have more than enough attractions to achieve that recognition."
