Tonight (23rd into the 24th) is the famous Festival of San Juan which is celebrated along the beaches throughout the whole of Spain and is the one day, and night, when we are allowed to camp out overnight on the beaches.

The festival commemorates Saint John the Baptist, but can also be traced to earlier pagan festivals that venerate the summer solstice and the magical power of the sun. Some forty pupils received their diplomas in English Language for the successful completion of an English course, sponsored by the City Council and conducted by Inter Idiomas, the most well-established and prominent Language School in Almuñécar.

The Mayor of Almuñécar, Juan Carlos Benavides; the councillor for Employment and Youth, Daniel Barbero; the Director of Inter, Jimmy Whale, and teacher Sarah Wilde, were all present at the award ceremony.

A man’s body was found floating in the sea off Tesorillo Beach in Almuñécar on Saturday. The man is estimated to be about 40 years old and appears to have drowned. According to Europa Press, the sighting of the body was reported to the Coordinated Emergency Service 112 and the Civil Guard at about 2:30pm. The identity of the man has not yet been disclosed and the cause of death is as yet unknown.
